When Joe Elenio and his siblings were children they looked forward to visits of friends or family from Italy because they usually came bearing gifts of sweets. Some – such as those containing liqueur or coffee – the children didn’t much like but they certainly enjoyed the nut-studded nougat bars called torrone (the best were covered in chocolate) and Baci, another chocolate-covered delight that reflected the name (baci are kisses).
